"The meeting of two president should be definitely call useful and it ended the way it was not expected by realists. The parties explained their positions to each other and agreed to return the Russian-US relations to a normal, acceptable for everyone level of a controlled "cool war" – this is how Associate Professor at the Department of Political Science and Mass Communication of Financial University under the Government of Russia and member of the Gorchakov Club Gevorg Mirzayan characterized the Putin-Biden summit during the "Expert's Opinion" show today, on June 17.
The expert also told about difficulties, which diplomatic missions of the two countries will have to face:
When speaking about breakthroughs in the area of arms control, Gevorg Mirzayan mentioned that there were no special changes to be expected as the Russian-US relations were not at that level.
"It will not be easy for the US ambassador to work because the United States is considered an unfriendly country. Overall, the ambassadors will be dealing with regular diplomatic work. There will be groups operating from both sides, and the ambassadors will have to be present to provide their work".
"The less we talk about arms control, the better it is for the Russian-US relations. The arms control is a sublimation of the negotiation process when we have nothing to talk about with the Americans or we are afraid of speaking about serious things. Those conversations are good when there is no agenda. We have real things and the compromise will be creating the needed atmosphere of trust in the bilateral relations".When speaking about how the US assessed results of the meeting between the two presidents, Mirzayan mentioned that Putin had reached that state of US preparedness to deal with managed confrontation, was acknowledged and had an opportunity to tell Biden everything that he thought about the Russian-US relations. Biden also received managed confrontation and good, but very limited press: he was not able to keep up with the speed of the negotiation process to the very end.
