A meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Gorchakov Fund was held on March 28

28 March 2016

On March 28, a meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Alexander Gorchakov Pubic Diplomacy Fund was held under chairmanship of Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov.

When summarizing results of activities of the Fund, the head of the foreign service mentioned interest in the highest level of engagement of public diplomacy, institutions of the civil society, experts and the academic community in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The most complete and objective information on the status of affairs in Russia, on our foreign policy course, is formed within the framework of our cooperation.

We would like to note with satisfaction that one of the key areas, where the Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund makes efforts, is providing financial support to civil initiatives in the field of international relations. The Fund annually considers, as far as I understand, about 200 applications from Russian and foreign NGOs. That demonstrates its growing authority, including as a grant-making organization.

The Fund also holds its own events, including research and educational programs (in particular, Diplomatic Seminars of Young Experts, CSTO Academy, Caspian Dialogue, Balkan Dialogue, Baltic Dialogue, Caucasus Dialogue, School on Central Asia, Dialogue in the Name of the Future and various thematic conferences and seminars).

The Club of Friends of the Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund, established in 2013, gained a reputation.

Experts of the Fund develop useful information and analytical materials. We hope that in the future the Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund will continue expanding a list of national and foreign NGOs, which cooperate with the Fund, thus, supporting communication among the experts on that level.

Today, we will review a provided list of priority areas of the activities of the Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund for 2017. I, like many others present, studied it. I think that during our discussion we will note that the Fund makes the goal of its programs to achieve efficient management of the Russian foreign policy in media space and increase cooperation with mass media. To my mind, it is a very important and right direction.

As we can see, the Fund is planning to further pay priority attention to relations with the CIS States, and, primarily, within the framework of CSTO, EEU as well as BRICS and SCO considering importance of those institutions in shaping new polycentric architecture of the world order. There is no doubt that we would like the programs and the projects of the Fund to also cover other areas of out multiple-vector foreign policy. Taking this into account, we welcome preserving and even promoting interest to problems associated with Asia Pacific Region and to issues of development of equal and mutually respectful relations with the EU countries and the USA.

Terrorism is, probably, one of the major issues for all the countries without exclusion. One can only support goals of research related to identifying ways of conflict resolutions, above all, in the Middle East and North Africa.

I believe that problems connected with falsification of history, including the history of World War II, goals of opposing glorification of Nazism and propaganda of extremist ideas and values will not lose their importance. I think that they deserve the most deliberate attention under the current conditions.

Dear colleagues:

Before completing my welcome address, I would like to express words of gratitude for cooperation with many members of the Board of Trustees, present here (and not), who have been providing support to activities of our Fund. I would like to acknowledge Mr. Chemezov, Mr. Kerimov, Mr. Chodiev, Mr. Prokhorov, Mr. Mordashev, Mr. Tokarev, and Mr. Vardanyan for financial support of the programs, implemented by the Fund within the framework of its mission.

I hope that we will continue the public-private partnership in the coming period as well”, Sergey Lavrov said.

During the meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Gorchakov Fund, results of the activities of the organizations for 2015 were summarized and the priority areas of work for 2016-2017 were approved.
