A participant of the Potsdam Meetings has been sworn in as German president

New President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier, elected on February 12, was sworn in at Bundestag on Wednesday in a ceremony held in the plenary conference hall and attended by former President Joachim Gauck and his domestic partner Daniela Schadt.


The candidate for the office of the president was nominated by a ruling coalition in Germany. Already back in June current president of the country, human rights activist and pastor from GDR Gauck stated that he did not want to run for the next presidential term due to his age. Gauck was born in 1940. There was a strong chance that he could have got re-elected for the office.


Steinmeier was elected my majority of votes. The nominee was supported by 931 voters. Altogether, 1 239 active votes of members of the Federal Assembly had been submitted. From the very beginning, he was considered a major candidate for the president’s office.
