Helene Carrere d’Encausse: The West needs Russia to solve the Ukrainian problem

04 March 2015

The West needs Russia to solve the problems in Ukraine and in the Middle East, stated French political scientist, historian, expert on the history of Russia Helene Carrere d’Encausse in her interview to RT.

“The West needs Russia to solve problems in Ukraine and in the Middle East. Without Russia they cannot be solved. How is Obama going to talk to Ukraine and Syria without Russia?”, wonders the political scientist.

She mentions that Iran and Syria are, in fact, evil for the US.

While Russia remains a key partner of Europe, it will play a crucial role in the Middle East, believes Mrs. Carrere d’Encausse.

“My hypothesis is that at a certain moment of time, not now, when Obama decides to make peace with Iran and Syria, he will need Russia because he will not be able to handle that without it”, she stressed.

When making comments about the situation in Ukraine, she mentioned that the crisis can be solved only without participation of the USA.

“It is more than possible, it is how everything will be in the end (without the USA). However, not at once. Remember that there is a strong Ukrainian diaspora in the US, as strong as the Polish one in Canada. This is why Ukrainians have the last word in the United States”, believes the political scientist.

She is convinced that the Ukrainian diaspora can influence the US political decisions.

When speaking about the sanctions introduced against Russia, the political scientist underlined that this was not a decision of the European Union, but rather of the European Commission.

“The EU policy on the Ukrainian issue, which took us where we are now, is not the policy of France and Germany. What I mean is that France and Germany are the EU members, but it is the European Commission, who oversaw relations between Europe and Ukraine”, stated the political scientist.

The European Commission, mentions the analyst, does not understand Russia, which is alien to it, and France and Germany are by far have more interests in the Russian Federation, she notes, and treat Russia with more sympathy.

We would like to note that Permanent Secretary of the French Academy Helene Carrere d’Encausse took part in the International Conference “The 70th Anniversary of the Yalta Conference of Heads of the State of Anti-Hitler Coalition”, which finished its work last week. The Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund was one of the organizers of the event.
