29 May 2017

International scientific conference “The Mexican-American War 1846-1848 in a Historical Retrospective” was held in Moscow on May 25-26. It was organized by Association of Researchers of Ibero-American World, the Institute of Latin America RAS, and the Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund.

During the conference, reasons and stages of the Mexican-American conflict, which took place in the 19th century, and its consequences for further development of relations between the two countries, including their current period, were discussed. The forum was opened by President of Association of Researchers of Ibero-American World Vladimir Davydov. After expressing gratitude to the Gorchakov Fund, he said: “We got together because of a very serious reason, which at the same time was not fully recognized by both academic and political circles. It refers to the biggest event of the 19th century, at least for the Western Hemisphere. That event determined to a great extent geopolitical and geo-economic configuration of the modern Western Hemisphere and, perhaps, even of the modern world”.

The attendees were welcomed by Acting Director of the Institute of Latin America RAS Violetta Tayar. She identified the goals of the conference as discussing different aspects of the Mexican-American conflict, analyzing its background and reasons as well as assessing results and consequences in a historical retrospective for further development of the relations between the two countries.

Deputy Executive Director of the Gorchakov Fund Roman Grishenin also welcomed the participants. He mentioned that organizing the conference within the walls of the Fund was extremely important.
