The Potsdam Meetings united Moscow and Berlin online
On May 25, the German-Russian Forum and the Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund are hosting the 23th Potsdam Meetings on the RSI platform. The topic of the conference organized under the patronage of ministers of foreign affairs of Russia and Germany Sergey Lavrov and Heiko Maas is “Germany-Russia-EU: The Pandemic and Its Influence on the Foreign and Security Policies”.
The foreign ministers sent welcome messages addressing the participants of the meeting. The message sent by Heiko Maas mentions that under current conditions we have to learn to communicate in a new format. The coronavirus pandemic is changing the past priorities. However, countries can only face the common threat together. A solution of global problems can be found only if using a multilateral format.
"Contacts between health agencies of our countries are expanding. And discussions at the Potsdam Meetings will make a new contribution into the dialogue of the civil societies. New projects and initiatives will come up", emphasized Heiko Maas in his message.
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, in his turn, mentioned the importance of leadership of Moscow and Berlin in a rapidly changing world. The minister urged to transform a pessimistic, but currently popular motto – “The world will never be the same again” – into a more ambitious and forward-looking slogan – “The world must become a better place.”
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia in Germany Sergey Nechayev called the Potsdam Meetings a sought-after platform for a friendly dialogue, which allows searching for new areas of common interest and new ways of partnership. “The Potsdam Meetings remain the most important platform for a friendly dialogue between Russian and German people, within which search for answers to serious challenges is performed as well as for new areas of common interest for the German-Russian partnership”, said the diplomat. He told the audience that Executive Director and Member of the Management Board of the German-Russian Forum Martin Hoffmann was honored with an award pin of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia “For Contribution into International Cooperation”.
