The VI Russian-Georgian meeting of young political scientists. Speeches and Comments

03 March 2016

The Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund and NGO “Caucasian House” organized a traditional meeting between Russian and Georgina political scientists. Those discussions are held within the framework of the project “Russian-Georgian Dialogue for Peace and Cooperation”.

In Tbilisi, experts discussed main issues in political, economic, energy and defense fields. The event was opened by a speech of Executive Director of the Regional Center for Strategic Studies Mikhail Mirziashvili, who spoke about importance of an association agreement with the EU for Georgia and the process of its implementation. The speaker mentioned that implementation of  the Free Trade Agreement between the EU and Georgia will allow Tbilisi to reproach the EU countries in terms of democratic procedures and a free market. This being said, the document does not envisage membership in the EU.

Russian participants were interested in economic feasibility of the Euro-Atlantic course of Georgia. They reminded that in 2015 Azerbaijan was a leader in making investments into Georgia and cash flows from the EU countries had decreased.

A working day was continued by a meeting with Head of International Relations Program at the School of Law and Politics of the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs (GIPA) Tornike Sharshenidze. He presented a position of Tbilisi in regards to regional challenges and issues of security in Georgia.

Tornike Sharshenidze stressed that Georgia does not plan on returning the territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia by a military way. He is confident that Georgian military troops should not have been brought onto those territories, but the conflicts today pale into insignificance due to a difficult economic situation in the country.
