The VI Youth Forum of the Potsdam Meetings will take place on July 16
On July 16, the VI Youth Forum “The Potsdam Meetings” will take place. The conference, organized by the German-Russian Forum and the Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund, will be held online for the first time.
The topic of the coming forum is “Germany-Russia-EU: The Pandemic and Its Influence on Foreign and Security Policies”. The event will be opened by Executive Director of the Gorchakov Fund Leonid Drachevsky, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Germany Sergey Nechayev, member of the Bundestag (Social Democratic Party), Coordinator of Intersocietal Cooperation with Russia, Central Asia and Countries of the Eastern Partnership Dirk Wiese, and Special Representative of the President of Russian for International Cultural Cooperation (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia) Mikhail Shvydkoy.
Chairman of the Committee for Foreign Affairs of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia Konstantin Kosachev, Chairman of the Council for Defense and Foreign Policy, editor-in-chief of Russia in Global Politics Fyodor Lukyanov, member of the Bundestag of Germany (CDU/CSU), former Federal Minister Christian Schmidt and political scientist, expert Alexander Rahr will participate in the discussion of a large variety of topics associated with the bilateral cooperation and international relations, an assessment of prospects for overcoming the global economic crisis and consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, joint development of cooperation proposals in Europe, and providing security in the region in the coming decades.
The discussion among young representatives from Russia and Germany will focus on two main topics – “Global Turning Points and Their Consequences: New Alliances or Succession in Foreign and Security Policies” and “Society and Economy as an Opportunity: The German-Russian Cooperation during the Pandemic and the Global Economic Crisis”.
Participants of the XXIII Potsdam Meetings, which took place on May 25, arrived at a conclusion that the coronavirus pandemic had not been able to significantly change the world. However, it could still accelerate or slow down the speed of those changes. A new agenda between Russia and Germany and an open discussion to strengthen the bilateral cooperation is needed in post-coronavirus Europe. Many topics of the May conference of the Potsdam Meetings will also be discussed in the youth format. This discussion will support development of trust in civil societies of both countries.
Participants of the VI Youth Forum of the Potsdam Meetings will include Russian and German Bachelor’s and Master’s students, post-gradates, scholars, representatives of the government and NGOs, and other international relations experts: political scientists, regional experts, teachers, researchers, lawyers, economists, businessmen, and journalists.
A live broadcast of the forum will be available on the YouTube channel of the Gorchakov Fund – at 12:00 pm Moscow time on July 16.
