Sergey A. Ordzhonikidize

Chairman of the Russian Public Council on International Cooperation and Public Diplomacy under Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation.


Graduated from Moscow Suvorov Military School in 1964 and from Moscow State Institute of International Relations in 1969. Since 1969 – held different diplomatic positions in the Central Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and abroad. 1983-1991 – Deputy Head of International and Legal Administration of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 1991-1996 – Deputy UN Permanent Representative of the USSR, the Russian Federation in New York. 1996-1999 – Head of Department of International Organizations, member of Collegium of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 1999-2000 – Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia. 2002-2011 – Deputy UN Secretary General, Executive Director of the UN Office in Geneva, Secretary General of the Conference on Disarmament.


Frequently participated in sessions of the General Assembly and other UN bodies, headed delegations to different international fora. Author of several publications on the issues of international law, international relations and disarmament. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary. Recipient of several governmental awards, including from foreign governments.
